Weddings in Costa Rica

When you think of a wedding in Costa Rica you probably think of beautiful beaches and romance. And you would be right. With almost two thirds of Costa Rica's borders consisting of coastline, Costa Rica is the perfect place for a beach wedding.

But what you probably don't know is all the other wonderful activities available in Costa Rica. You and your partner (and guests, if you have them) will have a honeymoon filled with adventure:

Surfing
White Water Rafting
Scuba Diving
Zip Line Tours
Canopy Tours
Cruises

As well as a wide variety of interesting destinations:

Arenal National Park
Arenal Volcano
Baldi Hot Springs
Manuel Antonio National Park
Monteverde Cloud Forest
Osa Peninsula
Poas Volcano
Tabacon Hot Springs
Tortuga Island
Tortuguero National Park

Of course, the hard part is choosing your wedding or eloping location in Costa Rica because there are so many wonderful destinations. We're going to narrow it down for you with some of our favorite places for weddings in Costa Rica.

Top Wedding Destinations in Costa Rica:

Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio, overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the western side of Costa Rica, is considered by some to have the most beautiful beaches in the world. What makes it outstanding is that it is an interesting combination of rain forest, beaches and coral reefs, providing a great mix of activities for the newly-wedded couple.

You can find wedding and elopement packages available at Hotel La Mariposa, which stands atop the highest point in Manuel Antonio and is best known for its 360 degree view overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Quepos, and Manuel Antonio National Park. Fodor's in 2004 has called it "The best view in town...," while the Washington Post in 2002 claimed "This small hotel probably has one of the finest views of the Pacific Ocean in the entire world." You can find out more information about La Mariposa at www.lamariposa.com.

Tortuguero

On Costa Rica's Caribbean side, Tortuguero is home to Tortuguero National Park, and offers a rainforest wedding that will knock your garter off. If you are an eco-tourist, you will love the hiking trails, massive waterfalls, and jungle waterways for canoeing. Check out Costa Rica Expeditions for the rainforest wedding package of your dreams. This outfitter has been named "Best Outfitters on Earth" in 2007 by National Geographic, and "The country's leading tour company." in 2007/08 by Travel+Leisure Family. They offer wilderness weddings at their three lodges: Tortuga Lodge, Monteverde Lodge and Corcovado Lodge, as well as Honeymoon Trips to Arenal Volcano, Cloud Forest and La Paz Waterfall Garden. For more information you can email them at costaric@expeditions.co.cr.

Mal Pais

one of the top surf destinations in Costa Rica, Mal Pais is located on the Pacific Ocean side of Costa Rica, in the southern region of the Nicoya Peninsula, also referred to as "the Hawaii of Latin America." The coast of Mal Pais is made even more beautiful by the rocky volcanic formations. The Hotel Tropico Latino, situated between Mal Pais and Santa Teresa, offers all-inclusive wedding services. For more information you can go to their website at hoteltropicolatino.com. Another place to consider for a wedding is your own bungalow at Hotel Milarepa. They can be contacted at milarepahotel@mac.com. After the wedding, take a boat trip and watch the dolphins and manta rays, or take a hike to the Montezuma waterfalls.

Tabacon Hot Springs

The Tabacon Hot springs are natural geothermal pools fed by the Tabacon River, which begins deep in the Arenal volcano. A wedding here offers you a location as hot your passion. In addition, Lake Arenal, La Fortuna, and the Monteverde Cloud Forest are all places within a few hours drive. You will find wedding packages in the Tabacon Hot Springs area at the Tabacon Resort, named as one of the Top 10 Hotel Spas in Mexico and Central and South America by Travel+Leisure. Imagine a wedding with a volcano and flowing hot springs as your backdrop. You can call them at 1-877-277-8291 for more information, or go to their website at tabacon.com.

Costa Rica Marriage Laws

You will happy to note that there is no residency requirement, nor is there a waiting period. You will, however, need the following:

1. Original birth certificate

2. Affidavit of single status (if applicable)

3. Police record

4. Valid passport

5. Divorce decree (if applicable)

All non-residents of Costa Rica must arrange a civil service for the marriage to be legal. If the bride has been previously married, she must wait 300 days after her divorce or the death of her husband before she can remarry. You will need two witnesses at your wedding. Family relatives up to the third degree cannot be your witnesses. If you have no eligible witnesses, you may need to arrange for some to be provided through your wedding coordinator or officiant.
