Tropical Island Weddings: Pros and Cons

Who wants a tropical island wedding? Well, who wouldn't? Having your wedding in a tropical setting makes a romantic wedding even more romantic. However, while a destination wedding on a tropical island may seem like the ideal setting for your wedding, there are some things to consider.

A wedding is a once in a lifetime event and no one really wants to think beyond the romance of it. More often than not the couple tends to lean toward making a huge splash and what better way to do that than on a tropical island beach? The blue skies, the warm ocean breezes gently caressing your skin, the beautiful beach stretching endlessly into the horizon, palm trees swaying in the wind.

The positive side of tropical island weddings may seem obvious:

  • Nothing makes a better backdrop for wedding photos than a tropical beach.
  • Many resorts on tropical islands offer special wedding packages, with a free wedding ceremony if you stay a certain number of nights. Book your honeymoon and you get your wedding thrown in! And, the resort usually handles all the details, so there's hardly any planning.
  • You don't have to plan a large wedding because the air fare and accommodations may be prohibitive for most of your guests. That also cuts down on your catering bill!
The negative side of tropical island weddings:

  • While it may sound great to have a smaller wedding, pairing down your guest list can be tricky. Feelings may be hurt. And, if there are particular people you really want at your wedding, they will have to pay for plane fare and accommodations, or you will have to pay extra for them.
  • Planning a wedding from afar often means you have less control over the event. Now, for some, that might seem ideal. No control means not stressing out over the details. But, if you're the type of person who likes to micromanage your event, the distance does make it a little more difficult. But if you have an excellent wedding planner in place, things should work just fine. Just be sure to hire someone who's planned destination weddings before, and who has a good knowledge of your destination.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to what's important to you. Whichever tropical island you choose for your wedding, just make sure the ceremony is legally valid in your home country.
