Orange County Photographer Looks at Crystal Cove As a Photography Location
By Vanessa Honda
Crystal Cove is a California state park located ust North of Laguna Beach in Orange County. Many people go there to enjoy the beach and nature trails. However, the park is also, for good reason, the site of numerous photography sessions. It provides an opportunity to shoot poses and candids in a setting that is much more relaxed (and in many ways more beautiful) than a studio.
Of course the first thing you need to do when you arrive is to park your car (there is a small fee for parking). The path from the parking lot down to the beach provides an excellent opportunity to shoot some beautiful, natural shots. The path is paved and takes you through a peaceful wooded area. Shots of couples or families holding hands as they walk down the path with nature as the back drop creates a wonderful photographic theme of unity.
About midway along the path there is a tunnel which is approximately 50 yards long. A portrait which is sure to get some attention is one in which a group stands at the entrance with the tunnel archway acting as a frame and sunlight streaming in from behind.
As you enter the beach area of the park you'll find some 1950ish looking barns and buildings. A fun and popular technique for shots taken in front of these structures is to change the coloring of these shots to pastel, black and white, or sepia. This creates a quaint historical look with tones of innocence and warmth.
Upon passing these structures you enter the beach area. Unlike many beach locations this beach offers both opportunities to get all sand and water shots and well as cliff shots. There are various rocks scattered throughout which are ideal for posing people. However, the best part of shooting at the beach is it allows people to relax. When people are relaxed they act in ways that are conducive to fun and warm expressions. These types of expressions are much more difficult to produce in a studio.
While the photographer is the critical factor for getting memorable shots, the location also contributes. Crystal Cove State Park in Orange County is a location which will contribute to that effort.
